Children & Young People Respite (0–18 years)

At Safe Steps Respite, respite for children and young people is delivered within a strong child safety framework. We are committed to Child Safe Standards and ensure every child in our care is protected, respected, and supported at all times.

Our children’s respite services are designed to:

  • Provide a safe, structured, and nurturing environment
  • Support children to feel comfortable, secure, and heard
  • Promote dignity, respect, and age-appropriate independence
  • Work in partnership with families, guardians, and support networks

We maintain robust child safety practices, including:

  • Thorough staff screening and child-safe recruitment
  • Ongoing training in safeguarding and professional boundaries
  • Clear supervision, routines, and risk management processes
  • Strong reporting and response procedures for any concerns

Children’s respite can be provided through SSRC, STA, or MTA, depending on the child’s needs and funding arrangements.

Adults Respite, STA & MTA

Safe Steps Respite also provides flexible respite and accommodation options for adults, including:

  • Short-Term Accommodation (STA)
  • Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA)
  • Planned or emergency respite
  • Accommodation-only stays for individuals who simply need a break, with no support services required

Our adult respite services are suitable for people:

  • Transitioning from hospital or another care setting
  • Waiting for long-term accommodation
  • Seeking a short break from their usual environment

Complex & Clinical Support

Our team includes highly skilled Registered Nurses with experience supporting participants with complex health and medical needs. This allows us to safely provide:

  • Hospital step-down care
  • PEG feeding
  • Tracheostomy care
  • Medication management
  • Support for participants with high clinical or behavioural needs

Care is delivered in a calm, non-clinical environment while maintaining appropriate clinical oversight.

Behaviour Support Services

At Safe Steps Respite, we provide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) for children, young people, and adults with disability who may experience behaviours of concern. Our approach is respectful, evidence-based, and focused on improving quality of life while maintaining safety and dignity.

Our experienced Behaviour Support Practitioners work closely with participants, families, carers, and support teams to understand the underlying reasons for behaviour. Together, we develop practical, individualised strategies that support emotional regulation, skill development, and meaningful participation in daily life.

We conduct comprehensive Functional Behaviour Assessments and develop Behaviour Support Plans that are tailored to each person’s needs, strengths, and goals. Our plans focus on:

  • Building skills and confidence
  • Promoting independence and positive relationships
  • Creating safe and supportive environments
  • Reducing the need for restrictive practices, in line with NDIS requirements

Behaviour support can be provided in the home, at school, in the community, or within supported accommodation, depending on individual needs and funding. Services are available to NDIS participants with approved Behaviour Support funding.

At Safe Steps Respite, our goal is to support children and adults to feel safe, understood, and empowered, while providing families and support networks with clear guidance and practical tools to maintain consistency and wellbeing.

Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3)

At Safe Steps Respite, our Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3) service is designed for children, young people, and adults with complex needs who require a higher level of guidance to navigate the NDIS and maintain effective supports.

Our approach is person-centred, collaborative, and grounded in a strong understanding of the NDIS. We work alongside participants, families, carers, and service providers to ensure supports are coordinated, responsive, and focused on achieving meaningful outcomes.

Our Approach

Strong Knowledge and Experience
Our Specialist Support Coordinators have extensive experience working with participants who face complex challenges. We maintain up-to-date knowledge of NDIS legislation, policies, and operational guidelines, and continuously strengthen our practice through professional development, supervision, and regular performance reviews.

Person-Centred and Values-Based
We respect each participant’s individual circumstances, preferences, and goals. Our work is guided by consistency, transparency, and respect, ensuring participants and families feel supported, informed, and heard at every stage.

Supporting People Through Complexity
We focus on helping participants overcome barriers that make it difficult to access, use, or sustain supports. This includes:

  • Identifying and understanding complex or ongoing barriers
  • Working collaboratively to develop practical and effective solutions
  • Prioritising urgent needs and coordinating the right supports at the right time
  • Supporting participants through transitions, crises, or changes in circumstances

Coordinated and Integrated Planning
For participants with complex support needs, we develop tailored coordination plans that bring together funded and non-funded supports. We establish clear communication pathways to ensure services work together smoothly, reducing stress for participants and families and supporting long-term stability.
